Testimonies

The most important thing for me was to be able to engage youths of Singapore and to help mould and change the lives of these children. The greatest satisfaction is knowing that the smallest thing you do can have the biggest change in the boys.

I work in SBHL because it is my passion to serve the boys. The greatest satisfaction is when they tell you they appreciate what you do.

I joined SBHL because I see a need and I want to fill that need - a need for these boys to see the possibility of a different life. The greatest satisfaction is to see their real life issues, to make real changes and to see them walking out of their problems.

I joined because my friend asked me to join. My greatest satisfaction is when i see lives changing. When we expose them to different things, when we show them that they can be better than who they are, i feel very satisfied.

I work in SBHL because it is my interest to work with youths and because someone first helped me when i was a troubled teens.this job allows me to do that same favour for someone else and it gives me satisfaction.

The greatest satisfaction is when you see your boys transformed when you compare them from the time they were admitted to SBHL to the time they discharge. Even though it is a many hands approach, but when you see your boys move on and are experiencing successes in their lives, this is something money can’t buy.

The most heartwarming moment is when i see *John (not his real name) progress. He was doing poorly when he first entered, he breached the restrictions of probations and was on the run for awhile. But now, about 10 months later, he is on Trial Home Leave and he is studying a diploma course, and he is working. I am very proud of John.

I work in SBHL because i think the youth here deserve all the help and guidance they need. These youths are not very different from other youths. Maybe their background could differ and they have made some wrong choices. But who has not made a wrong decision before?

The most heartwarming moment is when *James (not the real name) was going to court the next day and he felt there was a high chance for him to be sent away from the Hostel. During the last night, he took time to appreciate some staff for what they have done. And it was especially heartwarming to know that these boy knew how much the staff cared for him.
